Chail

About

Chail was built as a personal retreat by the Maharaja of Patiala after he was exiled from Shimla by the British Viceroy. He responded by building a summer palace in the hills near Shimla, which stands to this day as the heritage Chail Palace Hotel. The Maharaja also created the world's highest cricket pitch (2,250 m) on a levelled hilltop — still maintained by the Indian Army. Dense deodar forests create a wildlife sanctuary where barking deer, leopard, and Himalayan birds are regularly spotted.
