Why are there marine fossils in Spiti?

The Spiti region was once at the bottom of the ancient Tethys Sea, which existed before the Himalayas were uplifted. When the Indian plate collided with Asia ~50 million years ago, the seabed rock (with its fossils) was pushed up to form the current mountains.

Langza is an ancient Spitian village at 4,460 m where you can literally pick up 500-million-year-old marine fossils from the ground — ammonites, corals, and shellfish preserved in the soft shale, testament to when the Himalayas were beneath the Tethys Sea. A giant Buddha statue watches over the village from a raised platform, with the majestic peak of Chau Chau Kang Nilda as its backdrop. Langza is also an excellent spot for photographing Himalayan high-altitude flora.
